Earth Day 2023

As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the challenges we face. However, amidst the ongoing climate crisis, there are glimmers of hope and positive news to celebrate. Here are just a few of the many positive environmental stories from the past year:

Wind and Solar overtake fossil gas

Despite the difficulties of 2022, from cutting ties with Russia to climate-driven drought and soaring gas prices, Europe's clean energy transition has soldiered on. Wind and solar generated 22% of EU electricity in 2022, overtaking fossil gas at 20% for the first time, according to the European Electricity Review. A massive step in the right direction!

The Amazon Rainforest is making a comeback

Despite ongoing concerns about deforestation, recent data shows that the Amazon rainforest is actually regrowing at a record pace. In fact, the forest has absorbed more carbon than it has released over the past decade. This is partly due to increased protections for the Amazon, as well as a move to more sustainable agriculture practices.

Plastic waste is being addressed

Governments and businesses around the world are taking action to address the problem of plastic waste. The European Union, for example, has banned single-use plastics, while more and more companies are investing in sustainable packaging alternatives, like CRU!

Beavers return to London after 400 years

After previously being hunted to extinction, the beavers will be released in Ealing’s Paradise Fields, an eight-hectare site of woodland and wetlands, minutes from Greenford Tube Station. At least one male and one female will be released as part of the project against urban flooding and create diverse wetland habitats.

While the challenges we face in addressing climate change are significant, it’s important to recognise the positive steps being taken. From investing in renewable energy to funding innovative studies, there is reason for hope that we can build a more sustainable future. By continuing to prioritise environmental conservation and investing in sustainable practices, we can work towards a better future for all.
